Cloud modernization and training & simulation software engineering on DoW programs, including U.S. Army CPE ST3 programs and U.S. Air Force work, through subcontract work with General Dynamics Mission Systems, Cole Engineering Services, AVT Simulation and Kratos Defense.
U.S. Army: Next Generation Constructive (NGC)
Customer: U.S. Army CPE ST3
Role: Subcontractor via General Dynamics Mission Systems
What we did: Thazen engineers help design and operate the cloud platform behind NGC on ECMA / cArmy (AWS): a long-lived platform-services cluster for shared simulation services, plus exercise-specific clusters provisioned on demand for each training event. The team also supports live exercise execution, including fallback operations when cloud environments were unstable, and cross-vendor integration on the program.
Result: Isolated training environments that stand up quickly on shared platform services, with engineering and delivery kept moving through exercise execution.
What modern engineering changed: New simulation environments come online in minutes through Terraform and GitOps, and a service mesh with workload identity and mutual TLS secures traffic between clusters.
Technologies: Amazon EKS, service mesh (SPIFFE, mTLS), API Gateway, Terraform, GitOps, ECMA / cArmy, DevSecOps
U.S. Army: CPM Plus (ECMA / cArmy)
Customer: U.S. Army CPE ST3
Role: Subcontractor via General Dynamics Mission Systems
What we did: Refactoring monoliths into modular, containerized services and standing up infrastructure as code with automated tests and security gates on ECMA / cArmy, across AWS and Azure.
Result: A modular, event-driven platform for data streaming, serverless and analytics workloads, delivered through automated, repeatable pipelines.
What modern engineering changed: Monoliths became modular, containerized services, deployed through infrastructure-as-code pipelines with automated tests and security gates.
Technologies: ECMA / cArmy on AWS and Azure, IaC, event architecture, data streaming, serverless & analytics workloads
U.S. Army: CPM Plus (CTIA4 Modernization)
Customer: U.S. Army CPE ST3
Role: Subcontractor via General Dynamics Mission Systems
What we did: Cloud-native re-architecture of an Army application: containerization, microservices and a CI/CD path to production.
Result: Moved legacy components toward independently deployable services with security built into the pipeline.
What modern engineering changed: Legacy components moved toward independently deployable services, with security checks built into the CI/CD pipeline.
Technologies: Cloud-native architecture, containerization, microservices, DevSecOps, CI/CD
U.S. Army: CPM Plus Training Data Streaming (ECMA / cArmy)
Customer: U.S. Army CPE ST3
Role: Subcontractor via General Dynamics Mission Systems
What we did: Training rotations once needed hand-built replication to get instrumentation data into ECMA / cArmy for analytics and after-action reviews. Working with General Dynamics Mission Systems on CPM Plus, Thazen engineers built a reusable change-data-capture pattern: Debezium streams PostgreSQL changes through Azure Event Hubs to both an operational database and an Apache Iceberg lakehouse, and one parameterized IaC template gives each rotation its own isolated environment.
Result: Proof-of-concept results: sub-second end-to-end latency on both paths; environments stood up or torn down in under 30 minutes; designed to scale to dozens of concurrent rotations without redesign.
What modern engineering changed: Rotation-by-rotation data replication became one reusable change-data-capture pattern, deployed from a single infrastructure-as-code template.
Technologies: Azure, Event Hubs (Kafka), Debezium, Function Apps, Apache Iceberg, Synapse Spark, AKS, IaC
U.S. Army: Synthetic Training Environment (STE) TSS/TMT
Customer: U.S. Army CPE ST3
Role: Subcontractor via Cole Engineering Services Inc. (CESI)
What we did: Full-stack engineers embedded in the program’s Scrum teams: OpenShift migration, Kafka metrics integration, Grafana observability dashboards, and front-end refactors including quantized-mesh terrain in the interactive map.
Result: Better visibility into system readiness and faster, more reliable deployments for Army training software.
What modern engineering changed: OpenShift deployments, Kafka metrics and Grafana dashboards made system readiness visible to the program team.
Technologies: Kubernetes / OpenShift, Kafka, Grafana, Angular, Cesium, DevSecOps, CI/CD
U.S. Army: Persistent Cyber Training Environment (PCTE) / Cyber TRIDENT
Customer: U.S. Army CPE ST3
Role: Subcontractor via Cole Engineering Services Inc. (CESI)
What we did: Engineering in the PCTE Development Factory: agile delivery, release management and CI/CD pipeline engineering.
Result: A disciplined, automated path from commit to release for Army cyber training software.
What modern engineering changed: An automated CI/CD path from commit to release, with release management inside the Development Factory.
Technologies: Modern software engineering, containerization, DevSecOps, CI/CD, release management
